WTF is a SO42? / Què c*ny és una SO42?

SO comes from sonderausfuhrungen which means 'special model' and was how VW designated that special models.
For example SO1 was a westfalia's mobile shop, SO3 a police car or SO30 an ambulance. All these models where based on VW's Buses.

SO42 was ones of the last westfalia's camper conversions on a Split (T1) bus basis, before was SO22, SO23, SO33, SO34, SO35. SO44 and SO45 where contemporary to SO42 which was available between 1965 and 1967.
1967 was the las year of the Split(window), then came the Baywindow (T2), then the Wedge (T3), then...

The SO42 westfalia conversion is sure the most famous and the most ever copied all around. Many other coachbuilders made similar conversions on panel or kombi basis but Westies where the only that could be ordered directly from the VW Factory.

The layout was very handy as you can see in this '66 brouchure:

Per exemple, SO1 era una botiga mòbil, SO3 una furgoneta de policia o SO30 una ambulància. Tots basats en furgonetes VW.

SO42 va ser una de les últimes conversions de Westfalia sobre una base de T1 (Split window), abans van ser la SO22, SO23, SO33, SO34 i SO35. SO44 i SO45 eren contemporànies de la SO42 però no tant populars. La SO42 va estar disponible entre 1965 i 1967.

1967 va ser l'últim any de les T1, després van ser les T2 (Baywindow), després les T3 (Wedge), després...

La SO42 es sense cap dubte la camper més copiada, molts altres van fer conversions similars però només les Westfalia es podien encarregar al mateix concessionari VW.

La distribució era molt útil, tal i com es pot apreciar en el fulletó de 1966.

In this blog I will write all the thing related with our new acquisition. A 1967 Westy, SO-42 designation.

I decided to write in english to be able to reach the highest amount of readers possible. I'm from Barcelona and I use to speak catalan, so my english is not as good as I wished. I wish I could write the same info in spanish because of the lack of documentation in the net related with early westfalias.

En aquest blog escriuré tot el relacionat amb la nostra nova adquisició, una furgo VW Westfalia de 1967, model SO-42.

Escriuré en anglès per a poder arribar al màxim nombre de lectors, ja veureu que no és molt bó... Espero poder escriure també en català ja que hi ha poca informació de les primeres westfalia.
